New way for the production of heavy neutron-rich nuclei

چکیده
A new way is found to discover and examine unknown neutron-rich heavy nuclei at the ‘north-east’ part of the nuclear map. This ‘blank spot’ of the nuclear map can be reached neither in fusion–fission reactions nor in fragmentation processes widely used nowadays for the production of new nuclei. The present limits of the upper part of the nuclear map are very close to stability while the unexplored area of heavy neutron-rich nuclides along the neutron closed shell N = 126 (to the east of the stability line) is extremely important for nuclear astrophysics investigations and, in particular, for the understanding of the r-process of astrophysical nucleogenesis. A novel idea is proposed for the production of these nuclei via low-energy multi-nucleon transfer reactions. The estimated yields of neutron-rich nuclei are found to be rather high in such reactions and several tens of new nuclides can be produced, for example, in the near-barrier collision of 136Xe with 208Pb. This finding may spur new studies at heavy-ion facilities and should have significant impact on future experiments. Communicated by Professor J Aichelin

Production and study of new neutron rich heavy nuclei in multinucleon transfer reactions
30 years ago there had been a great deal of interest in the use of heavy ion multinucleon transfer reactions for the production of new neutron rich isotopes of heavy nuclei. Many experiments of such kind have been performed those time and very interesting information concerning collision dynamics have been derived. The cross sections for the production of above–target elements were found to dec...
متن کاملNew Nuclear Reaction Flow during r-Process Nucleosynthesis in Supernovae: Critical Role of Light Neutron-Rich Nuclei
We study the role of light neutron-rich nuclei during r-process nucleosynthesis in supernovae. Most previous studies of the r-process have concentrated on the reaction flow of heavy unstable nuclei. Although the nuclear reaction network includes a few thousand heavy nuclei, only limited reaction flow through light-mass nuclei near the stability line has been used in those studies. However, in a...
متن کاملβ-decay half-lives of heavy neutron-rich nuclei in the N≈126 region
The astrophysical r-process is responsible for the synthesis of approximately half of the heavy nuclei in the Universe. One of the main problems we have to overcome to fully understand the observed r-process abundances is the lack of information on the nuclei participating in this process, in particular for the heaviest ones. The production of heavy neutron-rich nuclei in the laboratory has bee...
متن کاملPrimordial Heavy Element Production
A number of possible mechanisms have been suggested to generate density inhomogeneities in the early Universe which could survive until the onset of primordial nucleosynthesis 1]. We studied the eeect of such inho-mogeneities on primordial nucleosynthesis. One of the proposed signatures of inhomogeneity, the synthesis of very heavy elements by neutron capture, was analyzed for varying baryon to...
متن کاملLight cluster production in intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei
The coalescence model based on nucleon distribution functions from an isospin-dependent transport model is used to study the production of deuteron, triton, and He from heavy-ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei at intermediate energies. It is found that the emission time of these light clusters depends on their masses. For clusters with same momentum per nucleon, heavier ones are emit...
